I USED TO BE A GREAT BASKETBALL PLAYER AT HIGH SCHOOL - MY NICKNAME WAS ELASTIC MAN. I WAS DEFINITELY NOT THE TALLEST GUY BUT I WAS SKILLED AND I COULD JUMP REALLY HIGH.
At university, I decided to focus entirely on my studies and stopped playing basketball. After graduation I became an engineer. A few years later, I happened to find myself on a basketball court and tried to slam dunk - just to see if I could still do it. I ended up 50cm short! That day, I made a decision - I would do everything it takes to slam dunk again.
I've trained four times a week for 12 years, I was doing all kind of workouts in order to build strength in my legs and get to jump higher. I started a Youtube channel and recorded myself every week to measure my improvements.
As part of my training, I picked up body building to build up strength and really came to enjoy it. I was so committed, I even ended up beating a weight lifting national record.
The birth of my daughter has been a game changer. I have to train at lunch time so I can spend time with her in the evening. More importantly she inspires me on the importance of sharing the learnings of my sports journey with her and others.
I learnt that the journey is more important than the end goal. In 12 years, I've met incredible people, started a family and achieved things I would have never believed possible at the beginning. I'm still pursuing my dream today and I just hope I can inspire others to do so.
IT TAKES A LOT OF COURAGE TO GIVE UP YOUR DREAM, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'VE DEVOTED SO MUCH TIME FOR IT.BUT I'M NOT THERE YET, SPORTS IS A WAY TO OUTDO MYSELF AND DREAM BIGGER.
